Roia Restaurant Gets a New Custom Drapery Makeover

Roia Restaurant (named after the river that runs along the boarder of Italy and France) was only a dream until Avi Szapiro and his wife, Meera Laube-Szapiro, set their sights to renovate the old restaurant, originally built for the Taft Hotel back in 1912.

Numerous restaurants had come and gone.  The daunting task ahead of Avi and Meera was to return the space back to its previous grandeur and re-open with a French-Italian cuisine. During renovation the original mosaic tile floor, paneling and original fixtures were found.

With the restaurants spacious main floor, high ceilings and a beautiful mezzanine, Window Products was given the mission to design and fabricate majestic custom draperies that would evoke the golden era.

The restaurant is unique in that it has two (2) levels.  The first floor houses the bar and main dining room with a private dining room tucked neatly in the corner.

Arched windows spanned the entire area.  Window Products adorned these windows with velvet tie back draperies that hung 100” from the rods to the floor.

Privacy for the private dining room was achieved with the same velvet fabric hung on rods with decorative grommets.

Upstairs, the same arched windows surrounded the balcony but the challenge was to create room dividers using draperies that spanned from one column to another.

This was achieved by using heavy duty industrial rodding secured to a newly installed header.  Grommetted two-sided draperies measuring 12 feet wide and 12 feet in length were hung from the rods.  When necessary, the drapes could be drawn shut providing privacy and the creation of another private area for meetings or dinners.  Each opening required two (2) panels weighing 75 lbs. each.

In all, a total of 400 yards of fabric was used.

Located in the heart of downtown New Haven next to the Shubert Theater and adjacent to Yale University campus, the ROÌA Restaurant is the crowning jewel in this beautiful historical setting.
