Color and Texture in Interior Design

Color in Interior DesignIn interior design, the colors and textures you choose for your furnishing, wall coverings, and window treatments set the tone of a room. The colors and textures you choose — and how you use them — should reflect both your personal preferences and your overall design theme.  Offering interior design services throughout Connecticut, with showrooms in Southbury and Branford, the design professionals at Window Products can help you make your favorite colors work beautifully in any room. Here are some ideas to get you started:

Use different textures as color variants. Natural woven wood patterns for window treatments, for example, add both color and texture to your windows. Other natural elements can also bring the calmness of nature to your rooms, such as textures replicating shells, sand, plants, and crystal.

Don’t be afraid to be bold. Bright colors and bold patterns are popular, adding style and attitude to any home. Using a bold color as a focal point in a room allows you to introduce more subtle secondary colors for balance and interest. Examples are a bold wallpaper pattern on just one wall or a brightly colored kitchen backsplash. Accent this main color with complementary colors on your window treatments and furniture.

Neutrals are okay too. The classic serenity of neutral color palettes offer timeless elegance. The spectrum of warm neutrals range from linen and ivory tones to the richest sable and chocolate shades.

Compromise with your colors. If you’re not quite ready for bold and bright, but you don’t want to go neutral either, consider “pseudo-neutrals” such as blue-gray or earthy olive tones. Gray is also a great way to add brightness to a room without going too bold. From silvery tints to deep smoky shades, gray colors and patterns can create a beautiful decor.

Use fabric to bring in color. Custom made drapery, pillows, and window toppers can lead you to a primary color scheme or be focal points in and of themselves. Striped drapes, checkerboard valances, or bright art panels can direct the eye to your room’s favorite features.
