Fixing & Staging

House Redesign

Mary Stryler, owner of Junk 2 Junk in Madison, CT was getting ready to send her daughter to college in the fall. Not an inexpensive venture, Mary was trying to think of creative ways to help pay the tuition when she got the idea of renting their house for the summer. Because of the location Mary’s house rented quickly. But now Mary and her daughter needed a place to live.

Her realtor friend had been trying to get Mary to stage a small 1,000 square foot house around the corner from her current home for the past couple years. Now seemed like the perfect time to tackle the project. Mary and her daughter would stay in the house rent-free for the next two-month, during which time they would fix it up and getting ready to sell…and on a shoestring budget!

Mary enlisted Kristen Wall, interior design guru and owner of Wall to Wall Home Concepts to help with the project and they decided to videotape the process called “Shack Attack”.

Kristen approached her good friend and associate Sylvia Prior, partner of Window Products in Branford, CT to add the finishing touches to the home by adding the window coverings in each room.

Sylvia has worked with Kristen on many residential projects and was happy to take on this challenge.

When Sylvia visited the “shack” it was clear that the home needed not only privacy in the master bedroom but some soft and textural touches on the windows.

fabricThe list below represents the type of treatments selected for each room. As soon as the fabric came in, Sylvia’s workroom, Custom Cloth, began making the drapery panels for the living room as well as the valances for the kitchen. The guest bedroom roman shades were next and the honeycombs and woven woods were ordered. The “shack’s” windows were going to be dressed!!

  • Master Bedroom – Honeycomb shades
  • Living Room – Woven woods with fabric panels
  • Kitchen – Woven woods on door and windows with custom valance treatments
  • Guest Bedroom – Custom Roman shades

Ready To Sell

With everything in place, the small shack is ready to go on the market and welcome it’s new owners. It goes to show, with a little out of the box thinking, and with design friends and partners willing to lend a hand, anything is possible. Could your shack be next?
