Use Fabric Instead of Traditional Wallpaper

These days, more and more people are returning to wallpaper instead of paint to create a unique look in a room. And here in at Window Products in Connecticut, what we’re seeing becoming popular as a wallpaper choice isn’t actually wallpaper—it’s fabric.
Now you can turn almost any fabric into wallpaper by using a paper backing (which provides stiffness and moisture protection to fabrics) available through such companies as Robert Allen and FabWall®. The paper backing is the key to this because, without it, humidity and heat can cause the fabric to bubble and sag; plus, the adhesives could seep through the front of the fabric.
Benefits to Choosing Fabric for Wallpaper
Almost any fabric can be made into a wall covering, to provide a striking effect on vertical surfaces. Fabric is great as well because it aids in sound absorption and room insulation, and the extra thickness helps conceal blemishes on the wall. You can choose a fabric that coordinates with other accessories in the room. Finally, the original color, texture, and quality of fabric is better maintained.
Selecting Fabrics
Although nearly any fabric can be used as a wall covering, here are some guidelines that can help you make the best choice. It’s best to stay away from fabrics with horizontal stripes or horizontal repeats, loosely woven fabrics, and fabrics that have a precision pattern where seams meet (for example, leaves of a tree). Remember, too, that once you hang your new “wallpaper,” you should treat the front of the fabric with a stain protection like one found here. Using this treatment will make the fabric it resistant to moisture and stains and allows it to be cleaned with a moist sponge.
