Learn About Pantone’s 2020 Color of the Year!

Pantone Classic Blue

Color is amazing. It can set a tone, change a mood, evoke emotion, and create a new environment. That’s why it’s always exciting to learn about each year’s color of the year—through the color, we can learn about what might in store for the upcoming year. At Window Products here in Branford, we’re happy to lead you through the Pantone process to determine this year’s Color of the Year. Read on!

Who Picks the Forecasted Colors

Have you ever wondered who is selecting the forecast colors and what the reasons are behind them? Here’s how it works: Selecting the Color of the Year takes approximately nine months. The staff at Pantone explores a variety of industries to collect what they refer to as “proof points.” They review the latest from the auto industry, designer runways, and interior decorating showcases. Once they identify the trends, they narrow down the choices.

Factors That Influence Colors

Color is not a whim. Numerous factors influence our feelings about color including:

  • Economy—When the economy is strong, popular color gets rich, deep, and vibrant. When it is weak, we see trends toward light colors and soft/safe colors.
  • War—When the country is under attack, color leaves our homes and becomes safe, soft, and practically nonexistent. Taupe, grays, and whites are war colors.
  • Events—When major events are forecasted, such as a Presidential election, the Olympics, and, yes, even the Star Wars movie, softer and safe colors are what we are drawn to.

Classic Blue Is the Pantone 2020 Color of the Year

Classic Blue reminds us of the first Color of the Year, Cerulean, another type of blue, which was chosen in 1999. Just as it was right before Y2K, blue seems to be a fitting color when we have instability gripping the world today. Classic Blue offers the confidence, reassurance, and connection that people are searching for. “It’s a color that anticipates what’s going to happen next,” said Laurie Pressman, the vice president of the Pantone Color Institute, which selects the Color of the Year.
